Ageing - International Comparison

Data from a statistical website provides a fascinating perspective on a problem facing mature societies - basically, not enough younger people entering the workforce in future to support the care of all the older people leaving it. From the table below, it can be seen that the first three countries have hit the problem already; the second three will soon; and the last three have a long way to go (though of course Iraq has other problems!).

Country % 15 or under % 16-64 % 65 or over
Italy 14.1 67.3 18.6
Spain 14.5 68.1 17.4
Japan 14.5 67.5 18.0
UK 18.7 65.5 15.8
Australia 20.4 67.0 12.6
USA 21.0 66.4 12.6
China 24.3 68.4   7.3
India 32.7 62.6   4.7
Iraq 41.1 56.9   3.0
